5 wonderful ways to spoil yourself with beautiful makeup

If you’re just getting started with makeup or wanting to try things but not sure where on earth to begin, I’ve put together a list of some of my most loved products for you to spoil yourself with. Heaven knows, we all need to treat ourselves sometimes.

Those of you who have been following me for a while, or know me outside of the internet, will know that makeup is something I truly treasure. And in this day and age, it’s not something we feel pressured into in order to feel worthy, acceptable, or beautiful. In fact, it’s something that’s entirely optional. And I love that. It’s like deciding to wear a necklace or a jacket, or a belt – it’s simply a style choice we make.

For me, it goes beyond even that. I see it as a (most times) daily indulgence. To sit every morning and choose my look, what products I want to use, which features I want to highlight – it’s my little me-time ritual in this crazy carousel we call life.

Revolution Conceal and Define Concealer

Now this might not seem like pamper makeup, but the Revolution Conceal and Define Concealer is a fantastic little miracle worker that helps you look like an absolute lady of leisure.

The shade range is really comprehensive for a drugstore/non-luxury brand, something that is especially important in Africa. The coverage is fantastic – it gets rid of my under eye circles in a flash, and doesn’t crease or look too dry (I’m in my mid-thirties for reference).

Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer

Is there anything better than a product that smells like a tropical island holiday? Every time I open this stuff I feel instantly happy and relaxed. On top of having this gorgeous scent, the Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer lives up to its name – it smooths across the skin like butter. Even with my very fair skin, it gives an even bronzed finish with no signs of patchiness. I’d say this has a satin finish, with a hint of sheen, but nothing overly noticeable.

Available at Dischem [I can’t find the price online, but it’s about the R250 mark]

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish – Soft and Gentle

This one truly is a cult classic. The MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is the highlighter of dreams. It’s my go-to day time highlighter, not overly dazzling, but still giving an ethereal glow that makes people say “I don’t know why but I like your makeup today”.

It’s not a cheap purchase (it truly is pamper makeup), and it is often times sold out due to its cult status, but once you’ve made the splurge, it will honestly last years. Just a gentle swipe over the tops of the cheekbones and hey presto – you suddenly look like you’re organised enough to actually drink 2L of water a day.

MAC Lipstick

There’s something so special about taking a MAC lipstick in your hand, slowly popping off that lid, and carefully applying it in front of your mirror. The colours are so unique, the packaging feels good to hold, and the smell of a MAC lipstick is so good. Does anything make you feel more like a woman with your shizbiz together than donning a lipstick before leaving the house?

Available at MAC Cosmetics [standard range is R250]

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

You know that spritz of perfume you give yourself, maybe only on special occasions, that makes you feel like a goddess? Finishing off my makeup with a healthy amount of Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray gives me that same feeling.

Refreshing, pampering, and wholeheartedly necessary, this step has become an essential part of my day. Once you’ve finished applying your makeup, you spritz this stuff all over your face (eyes closed, of course) and give it time to try down. As it dries, it sets your face for the day, as well as taking away that powdery look we often times get – your skin looks like skin again.

The result is a face of makeup that has melted into your skin, that also lasts all day long.

Available at Urban Decay [R480]
